How much does an international move cost? (2026)

By Rens Kleijmeer, Commercial Director at Windmill Forwarding with over 10 years of experience in the international moving industry · 11 June 2026

An international move by sea freight costs around €4,500 on average in 2026. But that average says little about your situation: most smaller shipments (1 to 8 m³) come in between €1,800 and €4,000, while a full household in a dedicated container quickly costs €10,000 (20ft) to €15,000 (40ft). On this page we give you — as one of the few moving companies — concrete price indications, based on more than 1,000 quotes we issued this year.

Price indication by volume

Small relocation

1 – 8 m³ · boxes up to a small apartment
€1,800 – €4,000
by far the most common

Medium relocation

10 – 30 m³ · apartment to family home
€5,000 – €10,000
groupage or own 20ft container

Large relocation

30+ m³ · large family home
€10,000 – €15,000+
own 20ft or 40ft container

These amounts are indicative and not binding. The final price strongly depends on the actual volume and your preferences.

Up to about 30 m³, groupage (sharing a container) is almost always cheaper: you only pay for the space your belongings take up. Also read: the advantages of groupage.

Price indication by destination

United Arab Emirates ± 13 m³ ± €5,000

These amounts are indicative and not binding — average quote prices 2026, door-to-door, excluding insurance and options. Destinations with the most observations; with smaller numbers the average is less meaningful.

What determines the price of your move?

  1. Volume — the biggest factor; with groupage you pay per m³
  2. Destination — sailing route, port charges and customs clearance differ per country
  3. Groupage or own container — sharing is cheaper up to ± 30 m³
  4. Options — professional packing, insurance, storage, disassembly
  5. Accessibility — floor level, elevator, parking when loading and unloading
